What is wrong with this IQ map of the world?
IQ tests are often used as universal measures of intelligence. However, they primarily reflect literacy, education, and cultural exposure, particularly within Western education systems, rather than innate ability.
Even the so-called “culture-free” tests struggle to capture the full spectrum of human intelligence across diverse cultures.
Less discussed is the harm that this misapplication can cause. Labeling entire regions, such as Africa, as having “low IQ” reinforces harmful stereotypes, justifies unequal treatment, and influences misguided policies. This echoes earlier colonial attitudes that dismissed local knowledge and practices as inferior, while elevating Western norms as the standard. On a positive note, today, AI offers an opportunity to correct these distortions. Voice AI, in particular, can help level the playing field by adapting to diverse linguistic and cultural inputs, ensuring equitable access to opportunities.
Multilingual AI platforms are already demonstrating how individuals can showcase their skills and knowledge on their own terms, rather than through the lens of some dominant “maître à penser”. If designed with inclusivity in mind, AI can enable fairer assessments, unlock new pathways to opportunity, and help people everywhere realize their true potential.
